How to put asset management on your board’s agenda
To put asset management on your board’s agenda, there are a few key things that it’s important to understand.
Understand how governance works - Governance is not the same as management. Taking a management approach is unlikely to get the board’s attention.
Understand how boards make decisions - Board decision making is different to executive decision making. The types of decisions differ in both scale and scope. Also, the process by which boards come to decisions, as a collective, is different to decision making by an individual.
Understand the board’s priorities - Your operational and management priorities are not necessarily the same as the board’s governance priorities. Understanding the issues that are important to the board, and also understanding the timelines they work to, is essential to putting asset management on the board’s agenda.
