productivity is for machines not for people

Productivity is important as a measure of performance - for machines and production plants. However, it's flawed, if not a bit lazy, to apply the same measures to people.

A focus on productivity treats people as machines and undervalues the uniquely human contribution that our people can make. If we gauge human performance by mechanical measures, robots will outperform us every time.

We are more than machines. Unlike productivity, creativity is innately human and can't be replicated by a robot. Creativity is essential to leadership, because we lead people, not machines.

Creativity is one of the nine Leadership Assets I outline in my book of the same name.
