Freedom comes at a cost
Freedom comes at a cost.
I'm sharing 20 insights in 20 minutes from my 20 years in business.
And today my insight is that freedom comes at a cost.
Yes, there is the concept of emancipatory entrepreneurship, which is really seeking the freedom to do your own thing, even though you may then have to make some other sacrifices.
So if you're thinking about leaving the relative security of an established career or long term employment, then certainly there'll be some differences if you decide to go out on your own or establish your own business, or perhaps pursue a new career path. There are a lot of benefits to that, but there are also some sacrifices and some costs that go with that.
So you've got to weigh up the pros and cons of what you might leave behind, the benefits that that might bring, particularly in terms of a regular income or other sorts of non-financial benefits that come with being in a job in a large company or some other organisation.
Certainly from my point of view, one of the things that I really value, and one of the reasons why I'm still doing this after 20 years, even though I could have many other opportunities that might be financially more lucrative or might offer me other benefits beyond that, is that I really value my intellectual independence. That I can say what I think and that I don't have to ascribe to somebody else's point of view or what someone else is telling me I need to think.
And so for me, that's really important. And it's one of the reasons why I've been willing to make a range of sacrifices to maintain that intellectual independence over the last 20 years.
So if that's something that's important to you, then certainly it's worth exploring.
But there might be other things that are important to you, that are the benefits you might gain if you do decide to make that choice.
